This offbeat and unusual museum, dedicated to exploring the cultural heritage of African Americans, was named in honor of Harriet Tubman, a former slave who led some 300 people to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. It includes cultural artifacts, folk and African art, rotating exhibits, and a mural spanning two walls that took decades to complete and depicts African-American culture in the region. The museum will move to a new $15-million facility on Cherry Street in the summer of 2006.

past exhibit: journeys by richard ward

Richard Ward is a multi-media artist based in Hampton, Virginia. This exhibition features more than thirty paintings and sculptures that combine symbolic visual references to African American history and culture with themes and objects from everyday life. As he seeks to unite seemingly disparate themes in his work, Ward also employs a highly personal repertoire of traditional and non-traditional materials in his art-making. A serialist, his latest group of works is called the Emulations of Jazz Series. In it Ward seeks to visually express ideas commonly found in the complex compositions of jazz music.
