GANSU, INC was founded in 1990, by William C. Conrad, MD. It is a Christian, charitable organization with a mission purpose to provide eye care through surgery and teaching to the underserved peoples of west China and Tibet. A contract, which allows this work, was negotiated with the Gansu Provincial Government in 1991. Each year teams of American Board Certified Ophthalmologists, nurses and non-medical volunteers are sent to west China to teach and perform cataract surgery in rural areas. The surgery is performed in a mobile surgical facility provided by GANSU, INC. This “pop-up” camping trailer surgical suite is a first for anywhere in the world.
